Screw-down crown: what is it for and why is it so important in watchmaking?

Discreet yet essential, the screw-down crown is an often overlooked technical element, yet fundamental in the watchmaking world. Particularly present on diving watches, it plays a crucial role in protecting the movement and ensuring the watch's durability. So, what is it really used for? And why is it so prized by lovers of robust and reliable timepieces? We explain everything.

What is a screw-down crown?

The crown is the small button located on the side of the case, which allows you to set the time, the date, or wind an automatic movement. A screw-down crown is distinguished by a thread: it must be unscrewed to be used, then screwed back in to ensure the watch's water resistance. It is this system that transforms a potentially vulnerable point into a true barrier of protection.

A key role in waterproofing and robustness

The main advantage of the screw-down crown is the enhanced water resistance it provides. By mechanically locking the crown against the case, water, humidity, dust, or sand are prevented from entering the mechanism. This makes it an essential feature on sports or diving watches exposed to extreme environments.

Why don't all watches have this?

While powerful, the screw-down crown isn't always necessary. Dress watches, worn in urban or professional settings, don't necessarily require such advanced water resistance. Additionally, the screw-down crown requires a specific case construction that can slightly increase the watch's thickness. This is why this technology is generally reserved for tool watches, designed to withstand the elements.

How to use a screw-down crown correctly?

To ensure optimal sealing, here are some good practices:

  • Always screw the crown back in after use.
  • Never handle the crown underwater or in a humid environment.
  • Do not force if there is abnormal resistance: maintenance may be necessary.

These simple actions ensure the longevity of your watch and protect it from infiltration.

The screw-down crown at Charlie Paris

It's a signature element of the Concordia collection , our collection of diving watches water-resistant to 300 meters, designed and assembled in France. This choice reflects our desire to offer watches that are both aesthetically pleasing and built for adventure, without compromising on performance.

The screw-down crown is more than just a design detail: it's a guarantee of reliability and robustness, ensuring watches built to last. Particularly at Charlie Paris, it embodies our watchmaking standards and our desire to accompany every moment of life, in the city and on the water.
